{"id":1154,"date":"2022-05-20T14:07:40","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T14:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/?page_id=1154"},"modified":"2022-05-27T15:11:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T15:11:02","slug":"covid-19-update-for-virginia-33","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/covid-19-update-for-virginia-33\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update for Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1137 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/04\/Letterhead-Greene_2022-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1700\" height=\"452\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">May 20, 2022<\/p>\n<p>Dear Colleague:<\/p>\n<p>Below are a few important updates, on the infant formula shortage, COVID-19, monkeypox, and the expected arrival of Ukrainian refugees. <strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Infant Formula Shortage Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To help families find infant formula during the shortage, VDH posted information on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/blog\/2022\/05\/16\/infant-formula-shortage-information\/\">VDH blog<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/wic\/\">Virginia WIC website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Additional resources are available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/formula\/index.html\">S. Department of Health &amp; Human Services<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/tips-tools\/ask-the-pediatrician\/Pages\/are-there-shortages-of-infant-formula-due-to-COVID-19.aspx\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CDC Recommends Boosters for Children Aged 5 to 11 Years and Strengthens Recommendation for Second Boosters <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On May 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0519-covid-booster-acip.html\">endorsed the recommendation<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0519-covid-booster-acip.html\">s<\/a> of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for children aged 5 to 11 years to receive a booster dose of Pfizer\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine at least 5 months after the completion of a primary Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine series.<\/li>\n<li>Vaccine providers in Virginia may immediately begin administering a single Pfizer booster dose for children aged 5\u201311 years based on the updated CDC recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>When updated, providers can reference the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/covid-19-vaccines-us.html\">CDC\u2019s Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines Currently Approved or Authorized in the United States<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Please continue to encourage parents and guardians to enroll their children in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/vsafe.html\">v-safe<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, CDC strengthened its recommendation that those 12 years and older who are immunocompromised and those 50 years and older should receive a second booster dose at least 4 months after their first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advisory about Treatment of High-Risk Outpatients with Mild to Moderate COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On April 25, CDC issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2022\/han00463.asp?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_511-DM80614&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=HAN%20463%20-%20General%20Public&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_511-DM80614\">Health Advisory<\/a> focusing on treatments for patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/clinical-care\/underlyingconditions.html\">high-risk of severe illness<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Antivirals for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 are widely available and can be accessed with a provider prescription at pharmacies statewide using the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid-19-therapeutics-locator-dhhs.hub.arcgis.com\/\">HHS COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator<\/a><\/li>\n<li>EVUSHELD is authorized for the prevention of COVID-19 infection for immunocompromised individuals. Supply of this medication is bountiful and providers are encouraged to assess patients for eligibility. Providers are encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/redcap.vdh.virginia.gov\/redcap\/surveys\/?s=K9ELDDPDLN\">enroll<\/a> as COVID-19 therapeutic providers and administer EVUSHELD to eligible patients. Alternative locations where EVUSHELD is administered can be found using the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid-19-therapeutics-locator-dhhs.hub.arcgis.com\/\">HHS COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Systemic corticosteroids are not recommended to treat patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who do not need supplemental oxygen, and antibacterial therapy is not recommended unless there is a specific indication for it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>FDA Limits Use of Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J)\/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Due to the rare risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) associated with the J&amp;J vaccine, on May 5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-limits-use-janssen-covid-19-vaccine-certain-individuals?utm_campaign=Coronavirus+%28COVID-19%29+Update%3A+FDA+Limits+Use+of+Janssen+COVID-1&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">FDA limited the authorized use<\/a> of this product to adults (\u2265 18 years old) for whom other COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate and adults who wish to get the J&amp;J vaccine because they would otherwise not be vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>FDA determined that the known and potential benefits of the J&amp;J vaccine outweigh the known and potential risks in the two groups noted above and align with existing CDC recommendations for use of this vaccine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Monkeypox Outbreaks in the United Kingdom and Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A case of <u><\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/index.html\">monkeypox<\/a> has been confirmed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/massachusetts-public-health-officials-confirm-case-of-monkeypox\">Massachusetts<\/a> in an adult male with recent travel to Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that typically begins with flu-like illness and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses to a rash on the face and body.<\/li>\n<li>No monkeypox cases have previously been identified in the United States in 2022; Texas and Maryland each reported a case in 2021 in people with recent travel to Nigeria.<\/li>\n<li>Since early May 2022, the United Kingdom has identified 9 cases of monkeypox; the first case had recently traveled to Nigeria. None of the other cases have reported recent travel.<\/li>\n<li>Information for clinicians is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/surveillance-and-investigation\/monkeypox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VDH<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/clinicians\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC <\/a>websites. If you suspect monkeypox in a patient, please report this to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/health-department-locator\/\">local health departmen<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/health-department-locator\/\">t<\/a> as soon as possible. Healthcare providers evaluating patients for suspected monkeypox should implement standard, contact, and airborne precautions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) Program and Tuberculosis Screening\/Testing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As part of the U4U program, up to 100,000 Ukrainians will be allowed to resettle to the United States for a period of two years, provided they identify a U.S.-based supporter and meet certain eligibility requirements, including receipt of a tuberculosis test within 14 days of arrival to the United States.<\/li>\n<li>VDH encourages Ukrainians who arrive in Virginia to work with their sponsor to contact their local health department to receive TB screening\/testing. Because Ukraine has a higher incidence of TB and roughly a quarter of their TB cases are multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB, it is important for public health to work proactively to identify and manage any active or latent TB infections in this population.<\/li>\n<li>If U4U participants present to your practice, please contact your local health department (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/health-department-locator\/\">https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/health-department-locator\/<\/a>) to ensure appropriate referral for TB screening\/testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/\">Virginia Department of Health (VDH) website<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/get-the-latest-guidance\/health-professionals\/\">COVID-19 clinical and public health guidance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/see-the-numbers\/\">epidemiologic data<\/a>, and other information.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks for your continued partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Colin M.
