From baby steps and babbling to building blocks and smiles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Be the champion for your child\u2019s health.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3>WHAT TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR?<\/h3>\n<p>The next time you have a well-child visit, talk to your healthcare provider about your child\u2019s growth and development. You can start the conversation by asking these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Is my child reaching \u201cmilestones\u201d for physical, social, and emotional development?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What can I do to support my child\u2019s growth and development?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tell the doctor what you have observed about your child and share any concerns you may have. You can complete a questionnaire about your child\u2019s development and take it to your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ages &amp; Stages Questionnaires\u00ae (ASQ-3) <\/strong>\u2014 a screening tool that pinpoints developmental progress in children between the ages of one month to 5 \u00bd years \u2014 is available at no charge through your local <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/local-health-districts\/\"><strong>Health District.<\/strong><\/a><\/u><\/p>\n<h3>ARM YOURSELF WITH INFORMATION<\/h3>\n<p>The more you learn, the more you can help your child grow and thrive. Use the Resources below to learn more.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 0in;line-height: 115%\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Gill Sans MT',sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b>What Are Developmental Milestones?<\/h3>\n<p>Skills such as beginning to crawl, smiling for the first time, and waving \u201cbye-bye\u201d are called developmental milestones. While each child develops at his or her own pace, typically children will reach certain milestones in how they move, speak, play, learn, and act.<\/p>\n<p>Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and early childhood providers can participate in <strong>developmental monitoring<\/strong> by observing how your child grows and changes over time and seeing whether your child meets the typical developmental milestones. You can use a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/actearly\/milestones\/index.html\">brief checklist of milestones<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to see how your child is progressing.<\/p>\n<p>A more extensive<strong> developmental screening<\/strong> may be performed by a doctor, nurse, early childhood educator, childcare provider, or another specialist.
