RHHD helps you understand what\u2019s happening in our local communities, our commonwealth, and our country, so that you can better protect yourselves and your neighbors from dangers like infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported the state\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/2025-news-releases\/virginia-health-officials-confirm-first-2025-measles-case-in-the-state\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/2025-news-releases\/virginia-health-officials-confirm-first-2025-measles-case-in-the-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\">first measles case of the year<\/a>\u00a0on April 19. The patient is a child (0-4 years) in the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/VDH_HD_map_2023_regions.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/local-health-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"13\">Northwest Region<\/a>\u00a0who had recently traveled internationally. Health officials are coordinating efforts to identify anyone who might have been exposed. Two doses of the safe and effective measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine provides the best protection against measles. MMR is a school-required vaccine for kindergarteners in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/05\/20\/what-does-it-mean-to-speak-to-a-medical-provider\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/05\/20\/what-does-it-mean-to-speak-to-a-medical-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"15\">Talk to your doctor<\/a>, school nurse, or other healthcare provider about the MMR vaccine. In the first stage, most people have a fever, runny nose, redness of the eyes, and cough. The second stage begins around days 3\u20137 when a red blotchy rash begins to appear on the face and spreads over the entire body. The rash generally lasts 5\u20136 days. Contact your healthcare provider right away. If you need to seek healthcare, call ahead before going to your healthcare provider\u2019s office or the emergency room to notify them that you may have been exposed to measles and ask them to call the local health department.
