Hayley Andrews, an infection preventionist in the <\/span>southwest<\/span> region of Virginia, <\/span>used her curious mind and a desire to educate others to <\/span>help<\/span> uncover environmental contamination that caused an illness in one of <\/span>her patients.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Hayley\u2019s <\/span>facility <\/span>admitted a patient <\/span>with sepsis, and blood cultures grew <\/span><\/span>Aeromonas <\/span>hydrophila<\/span><\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 <\/span>Because <\/span>Hayley had never heard of this organism<\/span>, she <\/span>researched it and learned that it is typically a waterborne organism.\u00a0 Hayley took this information to the nursing unit where the patient was located and the patient’s son heard her educating the nurses about Aeromonas<\/em>.\u00a0 He joined in and mentioned that his mom had a well and he was concerned that it may be contaminated. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The health department <\/span>visited the home <\/span>and tested the water<\/span>. Sure<\/span> enough<\/span>,<\/span> it was contaminated with Aeromonas<\/em> and other organisms, and failed potability testing<\/span>. The health department was <\/span>able to get the patient an alternate, safe water source upon her discharge to prevent further infection until her well water could be remediated.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
